Zozobra
As the final hurrah of summer and the Santa Fe Fiestas, Zozobra closes the season with a big bang, or better said, a burn! Created by Will Shuster in 1924, ZOZOBRA is a sight and sound to behold. Conceived through the inspiration of the Yaqui Indians of Mexico, Zozobra is a giant and animated marionette that has become a classic symbol of Santa Fe. In 1964 Shuster handed his model over to the Kiwanis Club who now hosts the famous tradition. "Zozobra", which has reached a height over 49 feet, means "anguish, anxiety, or gloom" or more properly defined in Spanish as "the gloomy one". The festival begins early in the day and ends with the burning of the giant marionette and a fireworks display. Proceeds from the event fund local educational and youth programs.
